Churches around Mumbai now ask worshippers to sign a form stating they came to pray of their own free will. The practice began in late August, just before Maharashtra's new anti-conversion law took effect. Around 4,000 churches in the Mumbai metropolitan area are collecting the forms, which carry no official standing — churches keep them in case a prayer meeting is challenged and organizers are accused of attempting conversion.
