Published guidelines on voice protection in August 2026
On September 30, 2026, the Tokyo District Court delivered Japan's first ruling that a person's voice can be protected under publicity rights. Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda (55), known for starring roles in Jujutsu Kaisen and Yu-Gi-Oh!, sued TikTok's operating company seeking removal of videos narrated with an AI-generated imitation of his voice. The court dismissed his removal request because the anonymous poster had already deleted the account, but the legal principle was established: a voice, like a person's appearance, "can be considered as a symbol of an individual's personality."
