Leading BEW's geothermal exploration program

Berlin has awarded its first deep geothermal exploration contract, putting a drill bit into the ground for the first time in a citywide push to heat the capital with underground hot water. District heating utility BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme (BEW) will sink an exploration well to about 1,950 meters at its Marzahn power plant site, investigating four thermal water-bearing rock layers — aquifers — that could supply heat for the city's grid.
