Vaxcyte said Monday its experimental pneumococcal vaccine met every primary goal in the first of three late-stage trials. VAX-31, which targets 31 strains of the bacteria behind pneumonia and meningitis, matched Pfizer's Prevnar 20 and Merck's Capvaxive on nearly all shared strains, beat both on three strains only it covers, and sent shares up roughly 50% to push the company's market value past $12 billion.
