Commenting on causes of China's falling birth rate

China crossed a demographic milestone. For every 100 working-age people, the country now carries 23.1 elderly dependents and 22 children — the first time the elderly burden has outstripped the child burden, according to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The shift marks 45 years after the one-child policy began, and the end of a demographic era in which families supported more young people than old.
