The United States now scores at its lowest level of democratic performance since measurement began in 1975, according to the Global State of Democracy 2026 report released Tuesday by International IDEA. The Stockholm-based organization found seven statistically significant declines in American indicators between 2020 and 2025, with nearly half of its 30 measures at 50-year lows.
