Mexican court closes case against migration chief over deadly 2023 detention fire

A federal judge in Ciudad Juárez has closed the criminal case against Francisco Garduño, the former head of Mexico's migration agency, over the fire that killed 40 migrants at a detention station in March 2023. Judge Victor Manlio Hernández Calderón ruled on October 13 that Garduño had satisfied the conditions of a suspended trial, including reparations to victims.
