Historical Context
2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.
Terry v. Ohio (1968)
A Cleveland detective stopped and frisked three men he suspected of planning a robbery. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that officers may stop someone and pat them down if they have reasonable suspicion of a crime.
Created the stop-and-frisk standard for police encounters.
Courts have since applied and limited that standard to vehicle stops and gun searches, including in Massachusetts.
Campbell's defense may argue the stop and the discovery of the gun went beyond what Terry allows.
Massachusetts ghost gun ban (2022)
Massachusetts made it illegal to possess or sell firearms without serial numbers, including home-built ghost guns. The law gave police a new tool against untraceable weapons.
Prosecutors now add untraceable-firearm charges when guns have altered serial numbers.
The law is part of a state push to restrict unregistered firearms; Campbell faces such a charge.
The obliterated serial number on the Glock is central to the gun charges against Campbell.
