Highland Park Village (1931)
Opened in 1931 in Dallas, Highland Park Village was among the first planned shopping centers in the United States, built across from what is now the Knox district. It mixed retail and restaurants in a Spanish-style, pedestrian-oriented complex.
The center drew shoppers from the affluent Highland Park and Park Cities enclaves and set a template for upscale strip development.
It survives as a luxury retail destination and a National Historic Landmark, anchoring the same corridor The Knox now joins.
The Knox adds a hotel to the retail-and-dining district that grew around this early walkable commercial center, extending the neighborhood's destination role into overnight stays.
