Active but under strain after 'dead end' reports

Five weeks ago, the United States and Israel launched surprise strikes on Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and triggered the largest disruption to global oil markets since the 1970s. Since then, two parallel tracks have run simultaneously: intensifying military operations that have killed over 7,300 people and a fragile diplomatic effort, led by Pakistan, to get the two sides talking. On April 4, Iran's foreign minister publicly denied reports that Tehran had refused to attend Pakistan-hosted negotiations, calling the reports a misrepresentation and keeping the diplomatic channel nominally alive.
