Seattle bans grocery 'surveillance pricing' based on personal data

Seattle's City Council voted 7-2 on Tuesday to ban 'surveillance pricing' — using shoppers' personal data to set individualized grocery prices. The ordinance applies to grocery chains with 20 or more locations worldwide, plus delivery services.

Seattle renters pay an extra 10 to 30 percent on top of rent through fees for pets, package delivery, and administrative paperwork. The city council voted 8-0 in August to ban most of those charges, effective July 1, 2027.
