Books & Mortar, a 10-year-old Grand Rapids bookstore, closed in August after owner Jenny Kinne said she was burned out. Three residents bought the shop, and it reopened September 3 under new co-owners Julie, Christine, and Will.

A new barbecue business has a health license on record in Madison. The Public Health Madison & Dane County list shows a health license on record for Gardener's Smokehouse at 1219 N. Sherman Ave, the address of FEED Kitchens, a nonprofit shared-use kitchen.

Rule Changes

Awaiting final approvals before opening

Christie's Lounge, a longtime gathering spot on Auburn Boulevard, received its California liquor license on August 31, 2026. The state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control issued a type 48 license, which permits on-site sale of beer, wine, and spirits as long as food is served alongside.
