Will report to AMD CEO Lisa Su after the deal closes

AMD has agreed to buy World Labs, the AI lab founded by Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion in stock. The deal puts one of AI's most prominent researchers inside a chipmaker racing to close Nvidia's lead in data-center AI. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.

For most of the past decade, the United States led in artificial intelligence — Stanford University's ninth annual AI Index, released April 13, says that lead is effectively gone. Chinese models have traded places with American ones at the top of performance rankings multiple times since early 2025, and the current gap is 2.7 percentage points, down from double digits.
