Running the Flint program and its evaluation
For four years, a baby born in Flint, Michigan, was about two and a half times as likely to die in the first month of life as a baby born anywhere else in the state. In January 2024, the city began paying every pregnant resident $1,500, then $500 a month for the baby's first year. In 2025, the first full year of payments, Flint's death rate in the first 28 days fell from 10.2 to 5.1 per 1,000 live births.
