Operating Blackbird Doughnuts and The Gallows; closing Banyan

Banyan Bar + Refuge, an Asian gastropub at 553 Tremont Street in Boston's South End, will not reopen. The restaurant has been dark since a kitchen fire broke out in the early morning of June 30, 2025. Its owners, The Gallows Group, said on Tuesday they will put the group's time and money into growing Blackbird Doughnuts instead.

Blackbird Doughnuts has its permits to open in East Boston. The city issued a food-service license on May 1 and approved a $49,650 interior renovation permit for the Clippership Wharf space on July 31.
