Travis County 'Paws to the Polls' mock election (2026)
The League of Women Voters Austin Area and the Travis County Clerk's Office ran a pet mayor mock election using real county voting machines. Residents and children could vote for Gus the cat or Franklin the dog at events through September.
The mock election gave voters practice with machines ahead of the midterms.
It showed local officials using animal-themed events to make voting less intimidating.
Austin Animal Services' fee waiver uses a similar pairing of pets and voting, but it offers a direct adoption discount rather than a practice ballot.
