Ja' Grill, Hyde Park's longtime Jamaican restaurant, to close after nearly 20 years

Money Moves Chicago, IL local

The Harper Court institution outlasted nearly all its original dining neighbors before the owner called it quits

Overview

Updated 2 hours ago

Ja' Grill, the Jamaican restaurant that anchored Hyde Park's Harper Court for 12 years, is closing. Block Club Chicago reported the news on October 28, ending a nearly 20-year run that began in Lincoln Park.

Owner Tony Coates moved the eatery south in 2014 at the University of Chicago's invitation, becoming one of the first tenants of the redeveloped shopping center. Most of the other original restaurants are gone; Ja' Grill outlasted them all.

Why it matters

The closure strips one of the last independent restaurants from a University of Chicago development that has struggled to keep dining tenants.

Scenarios

1

Ja' Grill serves its last meal by early 2027

Likely Resolves by Jan 31, 2027

Discussed by: Block Club Chicago's reporting

The announced closure proceeds. Ja' Grill winds down operations, and the Harper Court space goes dark, matching the fate of most other original restaurants in the development.

2

Ja' Grill reverses or delays its closing

Unlikely Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: No public source predicts this outcome

Owner Tony Coates changes course, extends the timeline, or keeps the restaurant open past the announced closing. This would echo the rare late reprieves that occur after some closure announcements.

3

A new tenant takes Ja' Grill's Harper Court space

Possible Resolves by Jan 31, 2028

Discussed by: Hyde Park Herald's past reporting on Harper Court vacancies

After closure, the landlord seeks a new restaurant or retail tenant for the space. Harper Court's history suggests the space could sit vacant for months or attract a chain operator.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

February 2024

Jade Court closes at Harper Court (2024)

Jade Court, a Cantonese restaurant in Harper Court, closed in February 2024. The Hyde Park Herald reported that construction on the development's second phase and little help from the University of Chicago cut into its customer base.

Then

Another vacancy opened in Harper Court's dining lineup.

Now

Left Ja' Grill among the few independent restaurants still operating in the development.

Why this matters now

Shows the same pressures from construction and university policy that Ja' Grill had to survive before announcing its own closure.

2014-2018

Harper Court's original restaurants shutter (2014-2018)

Porkchop, Freshii, and A10 were among the original restaurants when the redeveloped Harper Court opened in 2014. The Hyde Park Herald reported they all closed within a few years, as did later tenants including the Jolly Pumpkin, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Native Foods Cafe.

Then

High turnover left Ja' Grill as one of the few long-term survivors.

Now

Established a pattern of restaurant churn at the development.

Why this matters now

Context for why Ja' Grill's 12-year run stood out and why its closure fits a longer trend rather than an isolated event.
