IMG completes World Nomads acquisition as nib exits travel insurance

IMG completes World Nomads acquisition as nib exits travel insurance

Money Moves

SiriusPoint's IMG pays $67.5M AUD for the adventure-travel brand; Allianz Partners takes nib's Australia and New Zealand travel business

Today: IMG completes World Nomads acquisition

Overview

Updated 1 hour ago

nib Group, an Australian health insurer, spent 2026 selling off its entire travel insurance operation. On October 1 the last piece closed: International Medical Group (IMG), owned by Bermuda-based reinsurer SiriusPoint, completed its $67.5 million Australian dollar purchase of the World Nomads brand.

The sale split nib's travel business in two. Allianz Partners took the Australia and New Zealand operations, most broker relationships, and the Travel Insurance Direct brand. IMG took World Nomads, which serves travelers in more than 100 countries, and the two deals combined returned $97.6 million in cash.

Why it matters

World Nomads' travelers in more than 100 countries now answer to a Bermuda-backed US insurer, not an Australian health insurer.

Scenarios

1

IMG ends nib's role as World Nomads' Australian licence holder

Possible Resolves by End of 2028

Discussed by: Insurance Business, the broker news outlet that noted IMG has not announced Australian licensing plans

WorldNomads.com Pty Limited currently operates as an authorised representative of nib Travel Services (Australia) Pty Ltd, which holds Australian Financial Services Licence 308461. That licence and the underwriter, Pacific International Insurance, did not transfer to IMG. To distribute World Nomads policies in Australia independently, IMG needs its own licence. It has not said when or whether it will get one.

2

IMG launches World Nomads in Brazil and Canada

Likely Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: SiriusPoint's February 2026 SEC filing

SiriusPoint said the World Nomads deal would expand IMG's distribution to include Australia, Brazil, and Canada. Australia already has the brand; Brazil and Canada are new. If IMG follows through, it will offer World Nomads-branded products in those countries, where the brand has recognition but no direct presence.

3

World Nomads growth shows up in SiriusPoint results

Likely Resolves by Mar 1, 2028

Discussed by: SiriusPoint investor materials

SiriusPoint's Scott Egan said the deal increases IMG's premiums written through a broader customer base. The test is whether travel insurance premiums under IMG, now including World Nomads and combined with Assist America, grow in SiriusPoint's annual results.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

April 2015

General Electric divests GE Capital (2015)

General Electric said it would sell or spin off most of its GE Capital finance arm, returning about $90 billion to shareholders. The move refocused GE on its industrial businesses of aviation, power, and renewables.

Then

GE sold large parts of GE Capital, including its US consumer lending and real estate units.

Now

The divestiture marked GE's shift from a conglomerate with a big finance arm to a focused industrial company.

Why this matters now

Like GE, nib is selling a non-core financial business to sharpen focus on its main line: private health insurance.

September 2021

Sirius and Third Point Re merge (2021)

Sirius International and Third Point Re merged to create SiriusPoint, a Bermuda-based specialty insurer and reinsurer listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The combined company brought together a global insurance and reinsurance book with new capital.

Then

SiriusPoint became a global specialty insurer and reinsurer with IMG as its wholly owned benefits subsidiary.

Now

The company has used IMG and Assist America to build a worldwide insurance benefits and assistance platform.

Why this matters now

Explains the ownership structure now behind World Nomads: a brand built in Australia now sits under a Bermuda-based reinsurer.
