Prohibition and repeal (1920–1933)
The 18th Amendment banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol nationwide starting in 1920. The 21st Amendment, ratified in 1933, repealed it and gave states the power to regulate alcohol within their borders.
States set up licensing systems to control alcohol sales after repeal.
Every bar or restaurant in New York that serves alcohol must hold a state licence to do so.
It explains why a restaurant needs a state liquor licence before it can serve drinks, including the new one issued to DunmoreEM at 11 Hanover Square.
