Philadelphia Independents boutique to close after 12 years in Old City

Money Moves Philadelphia, PA local

Co-founders say the profitable shop will shut by Dec. 24, leaving a local-maker showcase on North 3rd Street.

Overview

Updated 1 hour ago

Philadelphia Independents, a collectively run Old City boutique that sells only handmade goods by local artists, will close by Dec. 24 after more than 12 years in business. Co-founders Tiffica Benza, Ashley Peel and Jennifer Provost announced the closure on Instagram.

The shop has represented more than 50 Philadelphia makers and was profitable for all 12-and-a-half years it operated, Peel said. Its exit removes a curated local-gift stop from North 3rd Street, a corridor of independent shops in the historic district.

Why it matters

The closure removes a profitable outlet for more than 50 local makers from Old City’s independent retail corridor.
