SAP moves to become the registry for enterprise AI agents

New Capabilities

At Sapphire 2026, SAP launches the AI Agent Hub to govern its own agents and rivals' too

May 12th, 2026: SAP unveils the Autonomous Enterprise

Overview

Updated Jul 28

Big companies are buying AI agents faster than they can track them. On May 12, 2026, SAP said it wants to run the registry where all of those agents get logged, watched, and shut off.

SAP's software sits behind most of the world's payrolls and supply chains. Its new AI Agent Hub tries to make SAP the control room for AI agents, including ones built by competitors.

Why it matters

Whoever owns the registry of AI agents decides what those agents can touch inside a company's payroll, ledgers, and supply chain.

Scenarios

1

SAP ships the AI Agent Hub on time in Q3 2026

Likely Resolves by Oct 1, 2026

Discussed by: SAP News Center, ERP Today

SAP set general availability for the third quarter of 2026 and folded the Hub free into the Business AI Platform. If SAP holds the date, the governance layer opens to customers with its 680-plus submitted agents. A slip would push adoption into 2027 and give rivals room to move.

2

A rival ships a competing cross-vendor agent registry

Possible Resolves by End of 2026

Discussed by: The New Stack, ERP Today

Microsoft, Salesforce, and ServiceNow all sell their own agents and want to govern them. Any of them could launch a registry that governs agents from other vendors, blunting SAP's claim as the system of record. That would split the governance market before SAP locks it in.

3

SAP claims a large adoption number at Sapphire 2027

Uncertain Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: SAPinsider

SAP's pitch rests on customers registering non-SAP agents, not just SAP's own. At its next Sapphire, SAP is likely to report an adoption figure. A headline number in the thousands would show the registry is sticking. Silence would signal it is not.

Historical Context

3 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

February 2000

Microsoft Active Directory (2000)

Microsoft shipped Active Directory with Windows 2000. It became the registry that decided which users and machines could access what inside a company. Whoever was listed in it got in; whoever wasn't stayed out.

Then

Enterprises standardized identity and access around Microsoft's directory.

Now

Owning the identity registry gave Microsoft durable control over corporate IT for decades.

Why this matters now

SAP is making the same play for agents. The company that runs the registry of who can act decides what happens inside the systems.

January 2006

Salesforce AppExchange (2006)

Salesforce opened AppExchange, a marketplace where outside developers could list software that plugged into Salesforce. Salesforce set the rules, reviewed the listings, and took a cut. Customers got one place to find add-ons.

Then

Thousands of partner apps arrived within a few years, deepening customer lock-in.

Now

The marketplace became a moat, tying an ecosystem of developers to Salesforce's platform.

Why this matters now

SAP wants the Agent Hub to be the AppExchange for AI agents: the place everyone lists, and the place SAP controls.

July 2008

Apple App Store (2008)

Apple launched the App Store and required every third-party iPhone app to pass its review before reaching users. Apple set the terms, policed behavior, and took a share of sales.

Then

Developers flooded in, and the store became the only sanctioned way onto the iPhone.

Now

Gatekeeper power over a review process later drew antitrust scrutiny in the US and Europe.

Why this matters now

A governance layer that can approve or block agents is also a gatekeeper. That power creates leverage, and it can invite regulators.
