Bank plans to let clients post the token as trading collateral at LMAX without moving it

Today: Standard Chartered holds RLUSD for institutional clients in Dubai

Overview

Updated 54 minutes ago

Standard Chartered's Dubai branch now holds Ripple's dollar-pegged RLUSD stablecoin for institutional clients, making the bank one of the first major lenders to offer regulated custody of the token. The service runs through the Dubai International Financial Centre under the supervision of the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

The next step, not yet live, is a plan with Ripple and trading venue LMAX Group to let clients post RLUSD as collateral for trades without moving the token off the bank's books. Standard Chartered calls the model collateral mirroring; it depends on testing, regulatory sign-off, and internal approvals.

Why it matters

If the collateral model works, institutions can trade with stablecoins without moving them to a venue, cutting transfer risk and counterparty exposure.

Scenarios

1

Standard Chartered and LMAX activate RLUSD collateral mirroring

Likely Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: CoinDesk and The Block, alongside the companies' own statements

The three parties finish testing, sign final agreements, and receive the needed approvals. Clients then post RLUSD held at Standard Chartered as margin for LMAX trading products, with the bank mirroring the collateral value to the venue. This gives institutions a way to use stablecoins without holding them on the trading platform.

2

RLUSD stays off the ESMA register as EU approval lags

Possible Resolves by Jan 1, 2028

Discussed by: Cryptoticker, which noted RLUSD's absence from the ESMA register as of September 2026

RLUSD remains outside the EU's MiCA regime, so European investors reach it only through unregulated channels. Custody and collateral services stay concentrated in Dubai and New York. The bank's Dubai push continues without a European counterpart.

3

LMAX collateral integration stalls, custody continues standalone

Possible Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: The Block, noting the parties gave no launch date

The mirroring arrangement fails to clear testing or regulatory hurdles, leaving the custody service operational but the collateral plan on hold. Institutions keep transferring tokens to venues to post margin, and RLUSD custody at the bank remains a standalone offering.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

August 2023

PayPal's PYUSD dollar stablecoin (2023)

PayPal issued PYUSD, a dollar-pegged stablecoin on Ethereum, making a major payments firm the issuer of its own digital dollar for merchants and consumers.

Then

PYUSD grew into one of the larger stablecoins and pushed dollar tokens into mainstream checkout flows.

Now

It showed that established finance could both issue and hold dollar-backed tokens, blurring the line between traditional money and crypto.

Why this matters now

Standard Chartered's RLUSD custody extends the same logic to the banking side: a top-tier bank, not just a fintech, holds a stablecoin for clients.
