Heidenau's town council voted 13-6 this week to reject new Stolpersteine, the brass plaques set into German sidewalks to name victims of Nazi persecution. The motion, backed by the far-right AfD and the center-right CDU, directs future remembrance to the Nordfriedhof cemetery instead of the town's streets.

For the first time since 1945, a German state is poised to be governed by the far right. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) took 43.8% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt's September 7 election, nearly an absolute majority. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats trailed at 17.2%.
