UN elects five International Court of Justice judges as caseload hits record

Voted concurrently with the Security Council on the ICJ seats

The United Nations elected five judges to the International Court of Justice on November 3, filling a third of the 15-member bench for nine-year terms that begin February 6, 2027. Four won in the first round. The fifth needed multiple ballots after the Security Council and General Assembly backed different candidates.

UN backs new world map that corrects Africa's distorted size

For around 450 years, the standard world map made Africa look roughly the size of Greenland. On September 4, the United Nations General Assembly voted 164 to 1 to encourage schools, governments, and tech companies to show Africa's true dimensions.
