Endurance Energy lowered a 3-ton power plant onto an active underwater volcano nearly a mile beneath the Pacific. Hooked to a natural 281°C seafloor vent on Sept. 27, it produced more electricity than it drew for 8.7 seconds — a first for a seafloor geothermal system, the company says.
