Overseeing operations amid rising IDF casualties and UNIFIL deaths; campaign declared 'not short'

Israel's ground invasion of Lebanon, launched March 1, has reached a new phase with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) systematically destroying bridges over the Litani River, including strikes on April 4 targeting connections between Sohmor and Mashghara in eastern Lebanon. By late March, the IDF had struck over 500 Hezbollah targets, killed 70 operatives, and seized roughly 850 square kilometers using three armored and infantry divisions. The campaign has now severed at least seven major bridges, expanded evacuation zones north of the Litani, destroyed key infrastructure, and resulted in clashes killing six IDF soldiers.

Leading Israeli military operations during the 2026 Iran campaign

For nearly a decade, Iran insisted it had deliberately capped its ballistic missile range at 2,000 kilometers — far enough to hit Israel and American bases in the Middle East, but not Europe. On March 21, 2026, Iran fired two missiles at the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, a remote Indian Ocean atoll roughly 4,000 kilometers from Iranian territory. One missile failed in flight; a United States warship intercepted the other. Neither struck the base — but the attempt itself rewrote the strategic map.
