Updated 2 hours agoThe morning of August 26, a 600-meter-wide slab of glacier and rock peeled off Langtang Lirung, a 23,700-foot peak on the Nepal-China border, and fell 1,200 meters into the valley. The debris dammed the Lhende Khola river; hours later the dam burst, sending a wall of ice, mud, and water down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
The flood has killed more than 500 people in Nepal and five in Tibet, with nearly 3,000 missing — the country's deadliest disaster since the 2015 earthquake. Two days later, a landslide lake upstream began overflowing, halting rescue work temporarily and raising the risk of a second surge.

Dig Tsho glacial lake outburst, Nepal (1985)
An ice avalanche from the Langmoche glacier in Nepal's Khumbu region crashed into Dig Tsho, a moraine-dammed lake, sending a wall of water down the Dudh Koshi river. The flood destroyed the nearly complete Namche Small Hydel Project and swept away bridges and farmland.
The hydropower project was ruined and downstream villages lost homes, bridges, and crops within hours.
