West African Ebola epidemic (2013-2016)
Ebola began in Guinea in December 2013 and spread across borders into Liberia and Sierra Leone, infecting about 28,600 people and killing more than 11,300. The virus reached cities and overwhelmed health systems before an international response contained it.
The three hardest-hit countries saw economies contract and health systems collapse before containment in 2016.
The outbreak set the template for modern Ebola response: border screening, contact tracing, and safe burial teams.
Kenya's situation is the first time the virus has crossed borders on this scale since West Africa, and its cluster of health worker infections echoes that epidemic's hospital-based spread.
