Mach Industries doubles valuation in three months with $600M defense round

Vertical integration bet on rocket motors, drones, and jet engines lifts the startup to $3.7B

Yesterday: Extension: $600M at $3.7B

Overview

Updated Yesterday

Three months ago, defense startup Mach Industries was valued at $1.8 billion. On September 10 it announced a $600 million extension to its Series C that more than doubled that valuation to $3.7 billion and pushed total fundraising past $1 billion. Sequoia, Ribbit Capital, Infinite Capital, and Bedrock all doubled down.

The company, led by 22-year-old founder Ethan Thornton, builds drones, counter-drone interceptors, and long-range strike systems. Its thesis is vertical integration: own the solid rocket motors, jet engines, and airframes to out-produce the legacy primes. Solid rocket motor lead times stretch for years, and Mach's May acquisition of Exquadrum put an in-house source in place.

Why it matters

If this vertical integration bet works, Mach could out-produce the defense primes on drones and missiles, changing who builds America's weapons.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

2002–2008

SpaceX's in-house engine bet (2002–2008)

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002. Frustrated by slow, expensive legacy suppliers, he built the Merlin engine in-house. Falcon 1 reached orbit in September 2008 after three failed attempts.

Then

SpaceX proved it could build its own engines and rockets faster than incumbents.

Now

Vertical integration became SpaceX's core strategy, eventually undercutting the launch market.

Why this matters now

Mach's Exquadrum acquisition mirrors this: owning the solid rocket motor bottleneck to control production and cost.

2017 onwards

Anduril's rise (2017–present)

Palmer Luckey founded Anduril in 2017 with backing from Founders Fund. The company built software-defined border surveillance towers, then drones, and grew into a major Pentagon contractor with billions in contracts.

Then

Anduril grew from startup to a supplier of autonomous systems used by the U.S. military.

Now

It proved a VC-backed startup could take on the defense primes, opening the door for companies like Mach.

Why this matters now

Mach follows the Anduril playbook: raise aggressive rounds, build autonomous systems, win Pentagon contracts.
