Oracle moves Essbase to its managed AI lakehouse service

Oracle moves Essbase to its managed AI lakehouse service

New Capabilities

Decades-old analytics engine gains AI-assisted modeling and runs on four major clouds

Overview

Updated 52 minutes ago

Oracle is now offering Essbase, its multidimensional analytics engine that dates to the 1990s, as a fully managed service on the Autonomous AI Lakehouse. The service runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, with Oracle handling installation, patching, backups, and network infrastructure.

The offering adds an AI Cube Builder that proposes dimensions, hierarchies, and measures for analytical models, plus natural-language querying of cube data. Existing Essbase applications keep their calculations and Microsoft Excel planning workflows, but customers no longer operate separate infrastructure, filesystem storage, or the relational database underneath.

For companies that run financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting on Essbase, this removes a significant operational burden. For Oracle database and lakehouse users, it adds multidimensional analysis and write-back capabilities they lacked. All cubes in the managed service are federated, reading data directly from the lakehouse.

Why it matters

Essbase powers financial planning and budgeting at many large companies. This removes infrastructure upkeep and adds AI-assisted modeling.

Scenarios

1

Oracle retires customer-managed Essbase in favor of the lakehouse service

Possible Resolves by Q2 2028

Discussed by: Oracle's own documentation, which warns against applying customer-managed procedures to the new service

Oracle's docs already say not to apply procedures intended for customer-managed Essbase environments, signaling the managed service is the forward path. Once the lakehouse offering matures, Oracle may phase out the OCI Marketplace Essbase deployment option and direct all new deployments to the managed service.

2

Existing Essbase customers adopt the managed service

Likely Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: Oracle launch materials emphasizing continuity of business logic and Smart View workflows

Oracle positions the service as an evolution rather than a replacement, keeping dimensions, hierarchies, calculations, and Excel planning intact. Adoption depends on whether migration is smooth and whether customers see infrastructure savings as worth the move. Oracle may disclose adoption figures on earnings calls.

3

AI Cube Builder brings new users to Essbase

Possible Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: Oracle marketing for AI Cube Builder and natural-language querying

Oracle targets database and lakehouse users who have never used Essbase. The AI Cube Builder and natural-language assistants lower the barrier to building multidimensional models, potentially expanding the user base beyond finance teams. Oracle may publish customer case studies demonstrating this adoption.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

March 2007

Oracle acquires Hyperion Solutions (2007)

Oracle agreed to buy Hyperion Solutions for about $3.3 billion, gaining Essbase, the leading online analytical processing (OLAP) engine, along with Hyperion Planning and financial management tools.

Then

Essbase became a core Oracle product for financial planning, budgeting, and consolidation.

Now

Over nearly two decades, Oracle extended Essbase while Excel-based planning workflows remained central to its use.

Why this matters now

Explains how Essbase, a product from a 2007 acquisition, still anchors Oracle's financial analytics strategy and why the managed service matters to its customer base.

2018

Oracle launches Autonomous Database (2018)

Oracle introduced Autonomous Database, a self-driving, self-patching, self-tuning cloud database. It handles its own backups, patching, and optimization without DBA intervention.

Then

Oracle marketed it as a database that runs itself, removing routine administration work.

Now

The technology now underpins the managed Essbase service, with Essbase data and metadata stored in Autonomous Database.

Why this matters now

The managed Essbase service applies the same self-managing approach to a legacy analytics product, extending Oracle's Autonomous platform strategy.
