El Tenampa (1925)
Mexico City merchant Juan I. Hernández opened El Tenampa, a mariachi bar where ranchera ballads inspired impromptu singalongs. It became a cultural institution.
It became a popular gathering place for music and drinking.
It established the tradition of cantinas de despecho, where people sing heartbreak songs.
Sala De Despecho is a modern heir to this tradition, bringing the concept to San Antonio.
