Dick's Drive-In opens its first stand (1954)
Dick Spady opened the first Dick's Drive-In at 111 NE 45th Street in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, a few blocks from today's Latona Avenue address. It was a single walk-up burger stand with a short menu and no indoor seating.
The stand drew steady lines of neighborhood customers and became a local fixture.
It grew into a five-location Seattle chain still owned by the founding family decades later.
It shows a single modest limited-service storefront can grow into a lasting neighborhood institution. Chikku Chikku's license is a far earlier step, but every established eatery started with one.
