Appeals court installs former leader Kilicdaroglu; three-day Ankara standoff ends in tear gas

Overview

Turkish riot police forced their way into the Republican People's Party headquarters in Ankara on Sunday, firing tear gas and rubber bullets to end a three-day occupation. It's the party that came first in Turkey's 2024 municipal elections. The raid installed court-appointed leadership.

An appeals court ruled on May 21 that chairperson Ozgur Ozel's November 2023 election was invalid and reinstated his predecessor, Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The ruling is part of more than a year of legal action against the Republican People's Party. The party's most popular figure, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, has been jailed since March 2025.

Why it matters

If the court order stands, Turkey's main opposition will be run by a leader its members already rejected before the 2028 election.
