Building the temporary transformer and permanent grid expansion in Rotterdam
The Port of Rotterdam is Europe's largest seaport. Companies there want 2,068 megawatts more grid capacity than today's network can deliver—a fivefold jump in the waiting list over two years. Grid operators TenneT and Stedin have begun installing a temporary 500-megawatt transformer in the Europoort area to start chipping away at that queue.

Borkum Riffgrund 3 began commercial operation on August 31, 2026, adding 913 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind to Germany's grid. On September 24, Ørsted and co-owner Nuveen formally inaugurated the farm, which sits 72 kilometers off the North Sea coast and is one of Germany's largest operating offshore wind projects.

A tunnel boring machine named Elsa broke through under the Elbe River in June 2026, completing the single most difficult section of Germany's flagship north-south power line. Operators confirmed the 5.2-kilometer crossing between Wewelsfleth in Schleswig-Holstein and Wischhafen in Lower Saxony in August, clearing the way for high-voltage direct-current cables that will carry wind power south.
