Aramco buys 49% of Saudi AI company HUMAIN

Aramco buys 49% of Saudi AI company HUMAIN

Money Moves

Saudi Arabia's oil company and its sovereign wealth fund put the kingdom's AI buildout under one roof

Overview

Updated 42 minutes ago

Saudi Aramco now owns 49% of HUMAIN, the artificial-intelligence company the Public Investment Fund launched in May 2025. Aramco paid about 9.9 billion riyals ($2.6 billion) in cash during 2026 and handed over computing, data-center and digital assets, including staff and technology from its Aramco Digital subsidiary. The fund keeps 51% and majority control.

The transaction makes HUMAIN the AI arm of the kingdom's two largest financial institutions. Its stated target is 3 gigawatts of data-center capacity by 2030, a scale aimed at exporting compute to the region rather than only serving domestic customers.

Why it matters

Saudi Arabia is converting oil revenue into AI computing capacity. If the 3 gigawatts get built, Gulf cloud capacity becomes a real alternative to US and Chinese providers.

Scenarios

1

HUMAIN reaches 3 gigawatts of operating data-center capacity

Possible Resolves by End of 2030

Discussed by: Aramco and PIF joint statement; HUMAIN management

The 3 GW figure is the benchmark every part of this deal is sized against. Hitting it requires power contracts, chip supply and paying tenants to arrive on schedule. Announced capacity and installed capacity are different things, so the test is operational megawatts.

2

HUMAIN files for a dual listing on Nasdaq and Tadawul

Uncertain Resolves by Q2 2030

Discussed by: Tareq Amin, HUMAIN chief executive

Amin has said HUMAIN aims to list on both Nasdaq and the Saudi Tadawul exchange within four years. A filing would require audited revenue and a track record of paying customers, not just signed construction contracts.

3

Aramco folds the rest of Aramco Digital into HUMAIN

Possible Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: Middle East AI News, reporting on transferred Aramco Digital assets

The deal moved some of Aramco Digital's portfolio, people and expertise into HUMAIN. A full absorption would leave Aramco's internal digital unit as a customer rather than a parallel operator, concentrating the kingdom's AI talent in one company.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

2024

ADNOC sells 51% of AIQ to Presight (2024)

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company moved its energy-focused AI unit, AIQ, into a venture with Presight, a listed analytics company. Presight took 51% and ADNOC kept 49%. The agreement valued AIQ at more than $1.4 billion.

Then

AIQ became a commercially separate company selling AI products for energy operations.

Now

The structure gave ADNOC a way to commercialize internal technology without giving up the operating data behind it.

Why this matters now

The closest regional comparison: a Gulf energy company carving out AI capabilities into a partly owned company. HUMAIN differs in scale and scope, building infrastructure for outside customers rather than tools for one industry.

2019

Aramco buys 70% of SABIC from PIF (2019)

Aramco agreed to buy a 70% stake in the chemicals maker SABIC from the Public Investment Fund, moving a major industrial asset between the same two state entities.

Then

The purchase gave PIF cash for its domestic investment program and put SABIC inside Aramco's balance sheet.

Now

It set the pattern this HUMAIN deal follows: PIF builds or holds an asset, then Aramco buys in with cash and industrial backing.

Why this matters now

Both deals shift ownership between Saudi Arabia's oil company and its sovereign fund, concentrating strategic assets under state-linked owners rather than selling them to outside investors.
