Brent crude crossed $100 on September 9 for the first time since July, after Iran attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz and the US destroyed five Iranian tankers. Prices retreated below $100 by September 21 as Trump signaled openness to talks and satellite data showed Saudi oil flows through the strait recovering to 2.9 million barrels a day, up from 700,000 in August.

Iraqi security forces say they seized a drone-launching platform inside Iraq used in the attack that shut Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline. The line carries about 4-5% of global oil supply and is Saudi Arabia's main alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since March.

On Christmas Day 2004, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz pressed a foundation stone into sand on Saudi Arabia's eastern coast. The stone marked the start of Jubail II—a roughly $80 billion expansion adding 6,200 hectares of plants, pipelines, and housing, effectively doubling what was already among the largest civil-engineering projects ever attempted.
