Overview
A billion people now open Google's Gemini assistant each month. Google said Tuesday the app passed that mark, its 14th product to reach a billion users and, by its own count, the fastest to get there.
Two AI chatbots now each reach a billion people a month. ChatGPT hit the number first, in June. The gap between the two products has narrowed to weeks, and both are folding directly into the phones, inboxes and search boxes people already use.
Why it matters
Talking to an AI has gone from a niche habit to something a billion people do monthly on each of two rival apps, in under four years.

Historical Context
2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.
Google Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer (2012)
Google's Chrome browser, launched in 2008, passed Microsoft's Internet Explorer to become the world's most-used browser. Google used its search homepage and bundling to push Chrome to hundreds of millions of users.
Chrome kept gaining share and became the default browser for most web users within a few years.
Google turned browser control into leverage over web standards, advertising and defaults, a position regulators later scrutinized.
Shows how Google can take a late entry and win on distribution through its existing products, the same play it is running with Gemini.
Facebook races past a billion monthly users (2012)
Facebook announced it had passed a billion monthly active users, about eight years after launch. It was the first social network to reach that scale.
The milestone cemented Facebook as the dominant social platform and drove its advertising revenue sharply higher.
A billion users became the benchmark for a truly mass-market internet product, a bar few companies ever clear.
Sets the historical yardstick Gemini and ChatGPT just cleared far faster, showing how quickly AI assistants scaled.
