Overview

A fire in Greece used to be spotted by a person, a plane, or a foreign satellite that only saw blazes the size of a cruise ship. Now four suitcase-sized satellites watch Greek soil for heat and can flag a fire as small as a parking space, sending the alert to firefighters within minutes.

Greece is the first country to build a satellite array dedicated to its own wildfires and wire it straight into its fire service. The €20 million system arrives after two disasters that shaped it: the 2018 Mati fire that killed 104 people, and the 2023 blaze that became the largest ever recorded in the European Union.
