The 'Own Your AI' pitch packages agents, data, and compute so banks run AI on their own hardware

Yesterday: Fintelligent AI Solution launched worldwide

Overview

Updated 2 hours ago

Huawei is betting that banks will want AI they can run on their own servers rather than in a US hyperscaler's cloud. The Fintelligent AI Solution, launched at HUAWEI CONNECT 2026 in Shanghai on September 21, packages agent software, data pipelines, and compute into one system financial institutions deploy on their own infrastructure.

The pitch, "Own Your AI, Own Your Intelligence," comes from Jason Cao, CEO of Huawei's Digital Finance business unit. Fintelligent has three parts: an Agent Factory for building software agents, a Token Factory for managing AI usage costs, and a Data-Knowledge Factory that feeds banks' data and documents to those agents.

Huawei has served more than 7,100 financial customers across 80 countries, including 54 of the world's top 100 banks. Whether those customers adopt agentic AI at scale now depends on security, cost, and supply — the exact problems Fintelligent claims to solve.

Why it matters

If banks buy in, AI-driven decision-making runs on their own infrastructure instead of US clouds — shifting who controls financial AI.

Scenarios

1

Agentic Banking Goes Live Across Asia and the Gulf

Likely Resolves by Q3 2027

Discussed by: Huawei's own customer base; konsulteer.com analysis of the integrated infrastructure approach

Banks in the Gulf and Southeast Asia, already Huawei customers, pilot Fintelligent in fraud detection, credit scoring, and legacy core modernization. Production deployments follow as the Agent, Token, and Data-Knowledge factories prove out. Success depends on whether the three-factory model delivers cost control at scale.

2

Western Banks Sit Out; Huawei Dominates the Global South

Possible Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: Sanctions-conscious analysts; observers noting US entity-list restrictions

US, EU, and UK banks avoid Fintelligent because of export controls, data-residency rules, and compliance concerns. Adoption concentrates in China and in markets friendly to Huawei. Fintelligent then becomes a regional standard rather than a global one.

3

openJiuwen Becomes a Multi-Vendor Standard

Unlikely Resolves by Q2 2027

Discussed by: Open-source ecosystem observers

Huawei's open-source bet pays off as third-party vendors and cloud providers adopt openJiuwen for their own agent platforms. The agent marketplace it enables becomes a shared industry layer, reducing Huawei's control but expanding reach. Financial institutions gain a portable agent layer decoupled from any single vendor.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

May 2019 onward

Huawei's 2019 US entity-list sanctions

The US Commerce Department placed Huawei on the Entity List, blocking its access to American chips and software. Huawei responded by building its own compute stack, including Ascend AI chips and open-source software.

Then

Huawei lost access to US markets and key suppliers, forcing internal substitution.

Now

Pushed Huawei to develop a full silicon-to-software stack now underpinning Fintelligent's on-premises story.

Why this matters now

Sanctions explain why Fintelligent targets markets where Huawei can still sell, and why the on-premises, self-contained pitch is a strategic necessity rather than a choice.

October 2020 onward

EU Gaia-X cloud sovereignty initiative (2020)

European governments and companies launched Gaia-X to build federated, sovereign cloud infrastructure, reducing reliance on US hyperscalers like Amazon and Microsoft. The initiative struggled with adoption and funding as participants disagreed on architecture.

Then

Landed several national and regional data-sovereignty projects across Europe.

Now

Grounded the idea that regulated industries want infrastructure they control, even at higher cost.

Why this matters now

Fintelligent runs the same sovereignty play for AI: give banks control of their models, data, and token spend on their own hardware. Gaia-X shows this pitch attracts interest but faces slow adoption.
