3.75 million HYPE worth about $340 million released as Grayscale files SEC disclosure

Yesterday: 3.75 million HYPE unlocked

Overview

Updated 1 hour ago

Hyperliquid released 3.75 million HYPE tokens worth about $340 million on October 6. The batch, the largest single token unlock this week, went to core contributors, but it is not hitting public exchanges.

Hyperliquid Labs sold the full batch over the counter to a single institutional buyer, according to co-founder iliensinc. The sale came the same day Grayscale filed an 8-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its Hyperliquid staking ETF, which holds about $217.8 million in HYPE.

A large investor has been accumulating HYPE, buying 158,780 tokens worth about $13 million over the past month. Spot netflows show tokens leaving exchanges, with negative $4.58 million in the 24 hours before the unlock.

Why it matters

If the OTC sale keeps HYPE off exchanges, the unlock may pass without the usual sell-off, and ETF demand could push the token higher.

Scenarios

1

HYPE breaks $100

Possible Resolves by End of 2026

Discussed by: AMBCrypto, Block Insider

The OTC sale keeps the unlocked tokens off public order books, limiting sell pressure. ETF demand and whale accumulation push HYPE above $100. The token traded near $93 on October 6, so a move past $100 would be a new high.

2

OTC buyer dumps HYPE on exchanges

Possible Resolves by Nov 30, 2026

Discussed by: Tokenomist, Cryptotimes

The institutional buyer sells the unlocked HYPE on public exchanges, creating sell pressure. On-chain flows after October 7 will show where the batch goes. The sale price and any holding period have not been disclosed.

3

HYPG grows, institutional adoption expands

Likely Resolves by End of 2026

Discussed by: Block Insider, Cryptobriefing

The ETF attracts more assets as institutional investors seek HYPE exposure. Competing Bitwise and 21Shares funds had already attracted nearly $140 million in net inflows. HYPG's 0.29% fee undercuts both competitors.

Historical Context

2 moments from history that rhyme with this story — and how they unfolded.

January 2024

Bitcoin spot ETF approval (January 2024)

The Securities and Exchange Commission approved 11 spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in January 2024, after years of rejecting similar applications. The approval opened Bitcoin to traditional brokerage accounts and institutional investors.

Then

Bitcoin's price rose as institutional money flowed into the new funds. Billions of dollars moved into the ETFs within months.

Now

The approval set a precedent for crypto ETFs, leading to Ethereum ETFs and now Hyperliquid ETFs.

Why this matters now

Grayscale's Hyperliquid staking ETF follows the same mechanism: packaging token exposure into a Nasdaq-traded vehicle that traditional investors can buy.

January 2024

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust conversion (2024)

Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) traded at a discount to its net asset value for years before converting to a spot ETF in January 2024. The conversion allowed investors to redeem shares at the underlying asset's value.

Then

The discount closed after conversion, and GBTC became one of the largest Bitcoin ETFs.

Now

The conversion showed how Grayscale products work and established the trust structure used for the Hyperliquid ETF.

Why this matters now

HYPG is structured as a grantor trust, the same structure Grayscale used for GBTC. Investors hold an interest in the underlying HYPE tokens.
