Siege of El Fasher (2024–2025)
The RSF besieged El Fasher, Darfur's last army-held state capital, for 18 months. Food ran out, and residents ate ambaz, a peanut-oil byproduct meant for livestock. The city fell in October 2025 amid reports of mass killings.
The RSF took full control of Darfur's major towns and cemented its western base.
The fall drew accusations of crimes against humanity and hardened the country's east–west split.
El Fasher shows what a broken siege prevents. Reopening El Obeid's road is the army trying to avoid a second El Fasher on its side of the line.
