Managing the Palisades Tunnel construction package
The Gateway Development Commission launched the first tunnel boring machine for a new Hudson River rail tunnel on Sept. 28, the first new rail crossing under the river since the Pennsylvania Railroad finished a pair of tubes in 1910. The machine will bore 5,100 feet of hard rock under the Palisades Cliffs from North Bergen, New Jersey.

Late Sunday night, an Air Canada Express jet landing at New York's LaGuardia struck a Port Authority fire truck on an active runway, killing both pilots—Captain Antoine Forest, 30, and First Officer MacKenzie Gunther. Forty-one of the 76 people aboard were hospitalized, including a flight attendant ejected from her seat while strapped in. The airport shut down for 14 hours, canceling more than 600 flights.

JFK's original terminals opened in the 1960s as architectural showpieces—each airline building its own statement. Sixty years later, most of that infrastructure has become obsolete.
