Madison Public Market planning (2006-2026)
The city of Madison spent about 20 years planning a public market, converting a former Fleet Services building into a 45,000-square-foot marketplace with 28 permanent merchant suites. The project was a partnership between the city and the Madison Public Market Foundation.
The market opened in 2026 with about half its suites filled, with more merchants signing leases.
The market aims to incubate small businesses and minority-owned food vendors in a year-round community hub.
The Chowpati is one of the first food vendors at this new market, which took two decades to realize.
