Zelensky removes Zaluzhnyi (2024)
Zelensky fired the widely popular Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi and replaced him with Oleksandr Syrskyi. The move came after a stalled counteroffensive and public friction between the president and his top general.
Zaluzhnyi left the army and was sent to London as ambassador, defusing a rivalry with Zelensky.
Syrskyi held the post for about two and a half years before protests forced his own removal in 2026.
The 2026 change is the second time in three years that Zelensky has swapped his top general under pressure. It shows how contested the seat has become.
