Balfour Beatty wins contract for substation connecting three Dogger Bank wind farms

Built World

First phase of the 400kV Birkhill Wood station in East Yorkshire covers design and enabling works, with main construction due in 2027

Today: Balfour Beatty wins first phase contract

Overview

Updated 1 hour ago

Balfour Beatty has won the first phase of National Grid's Birkhill Wood 400kV substation, the new East Yorkshire station that will carry power from three Dogger Bank wind farms onto the UK grid. The contract covers detailed design and enabling works, which are already underway at the site north of Cottingham.

When complete, the station will connect 4.22 GW of North Sea wind capacity across Dogger Bank South East, Dogger Bank South West, and Dogger Bank D — enough to power about four million homes. The project is part of National Grid's £8.6 billion five-year investment in the Yorkshire and North East network.

Why it matters

The substation is the grid connection point for 4.22 GW of offshore wind; any delay pushes UK clean power targets back.

Scenarios

1

Birkhill Wood substation energised by 2030

Likely Resolves by Q2 2031

Discussed by: National Grid project programme; industry sources cited by Offshore Wind

Main construction starts in Q2 2027 as scheduled. The station energises in Q2 2030 and third-party wind farm connections complete by Q4 2030. Dogger Bank South developers make final investment decisions in 2027, keeping commissioning on track for 2031 and 2032.

2

Construction delays push Birkhill Wood past 2030

Possible Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: Supply chain analysts tracking grid connection bottlenecks

Gas-insulated switchgear shortages, grid connection queue pressures, or site consent challenges delay main construction beyond Q2 2027, moving commissioning into 2031 or later.

3

Dogger Bank South FID slips past 2027

Possible Resolves by End of 2027

Discussed by: RWE and Masdar investor communications; offshore wind project finance press (Recharge, Wind Power Monthly)

RWE and Masdar fail to reach final investment decisions for Dogger Bank South East and West during 2027, pushing wind farm commissioning beyond 2031 and 2032. The substation would still be built, but its utilisation would be delayed.

Historical Context

One moment from history that rhymes with this story — and how it unfolded.

Spring 2023 – 2024

Dogger Bank A and B connect at Creyke Beck (2023–2024)

The first two phases of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm, developed by SSE Renewables, Equinor and Vårgrønn, connected to the UK grid at the existing Creyke Beck substation, located roughly 700 metres south of the current Birkhill Wood site. Dogger Bank A completed in spring 2023 and Dogger Bank B in 2024.

Then

Established Creyke Beck as the grid hub for the Dogger Bank zone and demonstrated that Yorkshire's transmission network could absorb large offshore wind volumes.

Now

Showed the existing substation could not handle additional phases, leading directly to the planning and development of Birkhill Wood for the next three wind farms.

Why this matters now

Birkhill Wood is the direct successor to this earlier grid build-out, adding new connection capacity for Dogger Bank South East, South West, and D.
