Updated 1 hour agoThe Volta Region has long run on Ghana's weakest power: low voltage, frequent outages, and 206 communities with no grid connection at all. On August 29, the government launched a GH¢598 million project to connect all of them within six months.
The project is part of the government's Big Push agenda, delivered through its Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP). It pairs grid extension with a transmission fix. A new 45-kilometre, 161-kilovolt line from Asiekpe to Ho will replace the existing 69kV link, with a new bulk supply point in Ho.
It is the first phase of a national push for universal electricity access by 2030, with Volta, Oti, Central and Savannah regions targeted this year.

Ghana's National Electrification Scheme (1989)
Ghana launched a national plan to reach universal electricity access by 2020. It paired state-funded grid extension with Self-Help Electrification projects, in which communities supplied poles and labour while the state provided wires and transformers.
Grid coverage expanded rapidly, but rural areas and the northern regions lagged.
The 2020 universal access target was missed, leaving the gaps the Big Push now targets.
The current project repeats the state-led grid extension model, with one addition: it funds transmission upgrades alongside distribution lines, acknowledging that weak high-voltage links caused the low-voltage and outage problems.
Brazil's Luz para Todos (2003)
Brazil's 'Light for All' program set out to connect millions of rural citizens, using grid extension where feasible and solar systems in remote areas. It became one of the largest rural electrification drives in the developing world.

Ghana is deploying more than 2,000 transformers nationwide under the same initiative that funds the Volta project, applying the same lesson.
