Updated 1 hour agoChinese private launch firm Galactic Energy reached orbit with a liquid rocket for the first time on September 1. Its Pallas-1, a 52-meter two-stage vehicle, flew from a new company-built pad at Jiuquan with no customer payload, and completed all test objectives.
The flight is step one of a three-phase plan to recover and refly first stages. Each booster is designed for 25 flights, the capability behind SpaceX's cost edge, and LandSpace just proved the landing step works. Pallas-1 now joins that race as China's constellations demand cheaper launch.

SpaceX Falcon 1's first orbital success (2008)
After three launch failures, SpaceX's small Falcon 1 reached orbit on September 28, 2008, carrying a dummy payload. The flight kept the company alive and unlocked NASA contracts that funded the Falcon 9.
SpaceX won a NASA Commercial Resupply Services contract in December 2008.
One orbital flight gave a private company the credibility to scale into the dominant launch provider.

LandSpace's Zhuque-2, first methane rocket to orbit (2023)
On July 12, 2023, LandSpace's Zhuque-2 became the world's first methane-oxygen rocket to reach orbit, on its second attempt. It was also China's first private liquid rocket to do so.
The success established LandSpace as a leader in China's commercial launch race and funded its larger Zhuque-3.
Zhuque-3's August 2026 ground landing set the recovery benchmark Galactic Energy now chases.
Both firms used a small early rocket to fund a larger reusable one. LandSpace is roughly a step ahead on recovery, which defines the pressure on Pallas-1.
