Updated 52 minutes agoA 20-meter autonomous sailboat fired two live missiles off Hawaii in August. It was the first time a Saildrone unmanned surface vehicle (USV) launched a weapon, and it happened during RIMPAC, the world's largest naval exercise.
The demonstration moves the Navy toward distributed firepower: cheap, uncrewed boats that hold station for weeks and fire at targets cued by other sensors. The next Saildrone platform, the 52-meter Spectre, could carry a Lockheed Martin Mk 70 launcher with Standard or Tomahawk-class missiles.
