Scientists studying the deep brain faced these limitations: transcranial magnetic stimulation reaches only 2-4 centimeters below the skull, functional MRI shows correlation not causation, and deep brain stimulation requires opening the skull. Transcranial focused ultrasound sends acoustic waves through intact bone to reach regions as small as a few millimeters—deeper and more precisely than any previous noninvasive method.

Community impacted by professor’s killing; case now being reviewed for potential connection to Brown shooting

Brown's Dec. 13 shooting evolved from a campus lockdown into an extended manhunt. Gunfire killed two students—Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov—and wounded nine others; the initially detained suspect was released, and investigators have used residential and vehicle-camera footage to track the shooter's movements.
