Why it matters: If the plenary upholds the rejection, every vote for Deltan is void and the Senate seat goes to the next candidate.

Deltan Dallagnol finished second in Paraná's Senate race on October 4, winning a seat pending a ruling by the full Superior Electoral Court (TSE). His votes were counted after the court's president suspended a rejection of his candidacy hours before polls opened.

Community banks sue US regulator over crypto trust charters

Why it matters: If crypto trust charters survive, digital asset firms keep federal credibility without deposit insurance, capital rules, or consumer protections.

A trade group for community banks sued the U.S. banking regulator on Oct. 2 over federal trust charters granted to crypto firms. The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) says the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) overstepped its authority by chartering entities that mainly deal in digital assets.

US and Israel launch joint military campaign against Iran

Force in Play

The US-Israeli campaign against Iran, launched February 28, is in its eighth month. President Trump said October 1 the war was "essentially almost over" and that Iran will not get nuclear weapons. Washington and Tehran are trading written proposals through intermediaries: Iran presented a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran said October 4 it was reviewing the US reply.

Why it matters: A US-Iran deal could reopen the Strait of Hormuz before US midterms; failure means three carriers and renewed strikes.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries wins another Singapore LRT order

Built World

Singapore's Land Transport Authority ordered eight more two-car trains for the Sengkang-Punggol light rail network, pushing Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' total order to 33 trainsets. The order is part of a multi-year program to expand the 23-year-old system's capacity by 30 percent.

Why it matters: Singapore's Sengkang-Punggol LRT gets a 30 percent capacity boost as the northeast districts grow, with Mitsubishi supplying 33 new trainsets by 2030.

Senolytic drug pair improves liver fibrosis in pilot MASH trial

Why it matters: If confirmed in a larger trial, senolytics would be the first therapy to reverse liver fibrosis in MASH, not just slow it.

Eight of 17 patients whose fatty liver disease had progressed to scarring saw their fibrosis improve after three 3-week cycles of two drugs. One of 14 on placebo did. The randomized, placebo-controlled result, published in Nature Metabolism, is the first controlled evidence that clearing senescent cells can reverse liver fibrosis in people.

ELISA adds Cregit and stress-ng to Linux safety-critical software ecosystem

Why it matters: Safety-certified Linux systems in cars, aircraft, and factories need documented evidence of reliability; these tools help developers assemble that evidence.

Linux now runs in cars, planes, and factory equipment where a software failure can be fatal, and every one of those systems needs documented proof of reliability before regulators approve it. The ELISA (Enabling Linux In Safety Applications) Fund, a Linux Foundation project, added two open-source tools on October 5 at Open Source Summit Europe in Prague to help developers build that proof.

Congress moves to tariff the biggest buyers of Russian oil

Why it matters: The law is in force. Trump can now tariff the biggest buyers of Russian oil up to 100%, raising prices on Chinese and Indian goods.

Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act into law on September 18, two days after the House passed it 262-159. The law lets him tariff the five largest buyers of Russian crude oil or natural gas up to 100% and sanctions Vladimir Putin. Senate aides reported the top crude buyers are China, India, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan; the top gas buyers are China, France, Japan, Hungary and Belgium, according to Davis Polk.

On Sept. 21, Montreal city council voted to fine residents for insulting municipal employees, police included. The bylaw passed 35–25, with opposition leaders arguing it was rushed and poorly defined; first-offense fines reach $1,000.

Physicists detect hidden 'octupolar' magnetism using rotating light

Why it matters: Octupolar magnetism could shrink data-storage bits, which today are limited because dipole magnets spill fields into neighboring cells.

Two-pole magnets run the modern world. Hard drives, credit-card strips, and refrigerator doors all rely on the familiar north-south dipole. A University of Toronto team has now found a way to see a stranger magnetic state, one that behaves as if it has eight poles and that ordinary instruments cannot detect.
